Some cold, allergy, and sinus medications contain an ingredient called pseudoephedrine, which helps relieve nasal congestion. Unfortunately, this ingredient can also be misused to make an illegal drug called methamphetamine (meth). To help prevent this, Congress passed a law in 2006 called the Combat Methamphetamine Epidemic Act (CMEA). This law requires that products with pseudoephedrine to be regulated & sold behind the pharmacy counter.

You can still buy these products without a prescription, but you’ll need to go behind the counter to purchase them.

Pseudoephedrine (pronounced SUDA-FEDe-rine) is a highly effective, fast-acting decongestant that helps relieve tough nasal and sinus congestion. It’s widely recognized as the most effective oral ingredient for easing congestion related to colds or allergies.

It works by narrowing the swollen blood vessels in your nasal passages—the main cause of that stuffy feeling. As the swelling goes down, your blocked nose is cleared & you can breathe easier!

When used as directed, behind-the-counter drugs and medications are recognized by the FDA as safe and effective treatment options for your symptoms.
